Don't 'Focus on the Future,' Do Something Now!

The vice presidential debate reminds me of why people call lawyers, "liars." (Apologies to my decent lawyer friends.) J.D. Vance failed to answer a single question directly, instead relying on rhetoric to avoid saying anything that he knew would make him look like the hypocrite that he is. Instead of answering whether Trump won the 2020 election, he said he wanted to "focus on the future."

Well, we want to focus on a future that doesn't involve attempting to overturn democracy, destroying the middle class and reducing women to second-class citizens. That's why we're donating money to campaigns, raising money, sending postcards, making phone calls and knocking on doors. We know we have to do something now to make sure Kamala is elected president.

Tim Walz did an admirable job of touting VP Harris's record and talking about substantive issues, like impact of overturning the Roe v. Wade decision on women's lives, the Trump threat to Obamacare and Trump's deadly handling of the pandemic.

If you're like many of our members, you were watching the debate, too, and wondering how any woman could support the Republican ticket. If the Ms. magazine article is correct, a lot of young women who have identified with other parties will be voting for the Democratic candidates because they can't accept that they no longer have the right to self autonomy, and their access to birth control could also be threatened in certain states.

Sometimes have to take three steps backwards so that we can make a giant leap forward. The Harris campaign is all about restoring rights, protecting Americans of all backgrounds and keeping our country a place where democracy is practiced daily, not just used as a talking point by a slick politician.

Yours in the Fight,

Toni Denis

Abortion Rights Remain Key

Ms. magazine explored the many ways abortion rights are impacting the election this year, from galvanizing young voters of all parties to increasing maternal deaths in Texas. One article describes the deaths of three women, two in Georgia and one in Indiana, because they were unable to receive timely abortion care. In his debate, vice presidential candidate Tim Walz brought up the death of Georgian Amber Thurman, who left behind a 6-year-old son when she died from sepsis after suffering for 20 hours. We are fighting for them.

"I'm opposed to any policy that would deny in our country any human being from access to public safety, public education, or public health, period."
